Rhett’s Secrets

One thing that people have learned about me from my blog and fan page is that I can shop like it’s nobody’s business. I am a huge clearance and bargain hunter. Here are my secrets and how I shop. I hope they help you in your fashionable future!

Rhett’s 7 Rules!

1. I don’t plan.

I never go shopping looking for something specifically. If I want skinny jeans, I’ll be looking for them everywhere. I won’t have a mindset of “I need skinny jeans from this store or that brand”. I don’t plan because it gives me tunnel vision – if I don’t find what I’m looking for at the only store I planned on going to, it’s a let down and then I go home without looking anywhere else.

2. I am not label-happy.

I do have my favorites, yes. I love Abercrombie jeans, Journey’s for heels, Amazon.com for everything… you get it. I will buy anything from any label or brand if I like it.

3. I don’t single out stores.

I am a Walmart shopper. I’m also a shopper at Macy’s. I don’t believe in leaving a store out because it’s considered low end or cheap. The clearance section is amazing everywhere you go, ladies.

4. Clearance is my best friend.

I can go to the mall with exactly $100 and come out with five new outfits, including shoes. How do I do it? See below.

5. I trust myself.

My instinct for fashion knows what’s best for me or if I’ll wear something. I very rarely make any returns.

6. I don’t worry about numbers and letters.

I have jeans in my hope chest (where my bottoms all live) that are sized from 00 to 3. It depends on the label or brand. Every place cuts their denim a little differently. I may be a 00 at Abercrombie but a 2 at American Eagle and a 3 at Walmart or a 5 in Lucky Jeans. I have things in my closet that are a size S and a size XL. Just remember, when you are not worrying about what the tag says, you should be worrying if it fits your body properly – this goes for everyone!

7. When I’m in doubt, I ask Sean – my very fashion-forward boyfriend.

He is my favorite shopping partner. He’ll stand outside of dressing rooms, get sizes for me, pick colors, mix and match, and carry bags upon bags while I run around in stores. If I can’t decide if I should buy something, I’ll ask him. He’s very honest and knows what looks best on me, since I can be blind at times. If I can’t decide on a color, he’ll make the final decision.

How I Look Good In Everything:

Honestly, I don’t believe that I look good in everything, but so many of you have said that I do that I figure I must be doing something right. How do I do it? Like this (I think!)-

I wear my clothes. My clothes don’t wear me.

A lot of you are going, “duh”. But it’s more complicated than it sounds. In order to truly wear your clothes, you need to love what you are wearing and love your body. Ladies, one thing I can’t stress enough is that you are amazing and your body rocks. When you feel good, you look good. If you are unhappy in your outfit, it will show.

– I don’t worry about what people think of my outfits.

This used to apply to me every day, but since I started this blog, I do worry a bit since my outfits are out there for the world to see now. I don’t really think too much when I get dressed, it just comes naturally to me.

– I walk with confidence.

This isn’t easy for a lot of women, and I totally get that. Due to a lot of health problems, I spent the first 15 years of my life covered from head to toe in gauze, jeans and long sleeved shirts. It’d be 90 degrees outside and I’d be dressed like it was winter because I didn’t want my skin to be seen. I’ve gotten better due to immuno-suppressant meds, but my legs are covered in scars (that’s why they are white, they can’t get color due to scar tissue). I walk proud because I can show my skin now and I never could before. Be proud of yourselves. You deserve it. You’ve worked hard to get to where you are, and you’ve overcome a lot of struggles in life. You have every right to be confident. Not everyone is going to like what you wear, but if you feel amazing, that’s what matters.

Shopping With Rhett

It’s no secret that I LOVE to shop. I shop usually every other day in various places. No place is off limits to me. I mix Walmart with Abercrombie, Ann Taylor with Target, and so on. I’ve had a lot of people ask me how I get such good deals on stuff. It’s taken me a lot of years to perfect this. A shopping trip goes something like this:

I get an itch to go to some store. Yesterday it was Goodwill, tomorrow it may be Rue 21, Polo, Wet Seal, The Limited… wherever. I decide how much money I want to spend. Then I head to that store.

Once I get there, I head straight to the clearance section. I don’t even look at the merchandise in the front of the store (clearance is 99% of the time in the back). First I dig around in the size smalls since that’s what usually fits me. I pick out what I really love and hold on to it. Then I dig around in other sizes since I fit into different sizes everywhere, and also because things get mixed up easily in clearance so it’s always best to look through everything. Once I find everything I like, I go through the clearance again. Yes, I go through it twice. I do this with every clearance rack in every store. I then go find a quite corner in the store to go through what I picked out. I decide what I want the most and if I’d really wear it. I put back what I decide I don’t want. Then I go through the rest of the merchandise in the store. The reason I do it in this order is because if I put something back on the clearance rack that I thought I didn’t want but then can’t stop thinking about it, I can go grab it before I leave the store. I then check out.

– If I can’t stop thinking about an item, I buy it.

– Chances are, you will find something on clearance similar to the new merchandise in the store.

– Goodwill is a great place to go for the newest trend. People have a habit of getting rid of things right as they become popular again.

– Trends almost always last more than one season. Keep your stuff!

– Add your total before you check out.

– Take advantage of clearance + sales. A clearance + sale is when something is on clearance – originally $49.99 but is now $19.99, plus an additional 30% off (that’s just an example).

– Check online sales. A lot of times, they are better than in store sales.

– Keep an eye out for free shipping sales.

– Sign up for your favorite stores email and mail lists. You’ll get deals and coupons!

– Keep your clothes! Don’t throw things away after a season is over. I have things from 7 years ago still that I use in my outfits.
